You should know and understand the following:

  1. Layers of the epidermis
  1. Specialized cells in the epidermis: melanocytes, Langerhans cells, Merkel cells
  1. Types of pigments in epidermis – melanin, carotene, hemoglobin.
  1. Support structures in dermis:
    1. Sweat glands: eccrine, apocrine, ceruminus
    2. Sebaceous glands
    3. Arrector pili
    4. Pacinian receptors and Merkel discs
    5. Hair follicles
    6. Capillaries – where they are found
  1. Hair follicles – know how they are constructed – longitudinal view and cross section.
    1. Know what the roles of cells are in the follicle
  1. Be able to label diagrams of skin and hair and nails
  1. Know what blisters, calluses, fingerprints, cyanosis, acne is and what causes each.
  1. Burns – know the degrees of each type, the symptoms and signs, the rule of nines for estimating severity of burns, the risks involved with burns
  1. Know why hair thins.
  1. Know types of skin cancers
  1. Know purposes of skin
  1. Know some examples of how skin changes with age.
