Description
You will be responsible for writing an opening statement, questioning your assigned witnesses as well as asking witnesses for the opposition cross examination questions. The success of the trial depends on you completing these tasks well.
Requirements and Assignments
1. Opening Statement: 20 points due November 3
a. This will be typed, about 1 ½ pages with in-text citations
b. It should have good rhetoric and some drama. Be persuasive.
c. It should have some historical content
d. It must outline your general argument in support or condemnation of the Industrial Revolution, but do not give away your witnesses evidence
2. Cross Examination questions: 20 points due October 30/31
a. You must write three cross examination questions for four witnesses who are not on your side
b. These questions should challenge them- go to the website listed for the witness and try to find a weakness in their argument
c. These can be leading questions- “Isn’t it true that….”
d. They must be typed and clearly labeled with the witness’ names- their character’s name and their real name
3. Performance: 20 points November 4-7
a. You must be confident and persuasive
b. Rehearse your questions and their answers with your witness (The witness is responsible for writing the questions for you. You need to become familiar with them and you will have class time for this).
c. Be respectful but make your point during the cross examination
4.Editorial Cartoon based on trial: 20 points due November 10 and November 12
a. You may choose your topic either based on your character, another person’s testimony or the outcome of the trial
b. Use images or symbols to make your point
c. A political cartoon is NOT an illustration of event, but a comment on the event, it should reflect bias and make a clear point
