The Assignment

Mr. Geib said,
Go home and write a poem tonight.
Let the words just flow onto the page,
Your verse will be all the rage,
And everyone will see how well it is made.

I sat, I thought, I waited.
Waited for inspiration;
Anything to light the internal fire.
But nothing-
Only silence encircled me.

My mind drifted
(As it all too often does.)
Random thoughts darting through,
Never settling, simply restless.

The empty screen glared at me;
A constant reminder.
I started into it; still nothing.
How could I be so blank?

My eyes flitted,
Traveling around the room.
Nothing...
Nothing I saw cause a spark,
Until a photo glared up at me.

As I started at the pictures of us,
Taken not that long ago,
I could only wish to return
To the place I couldn't wait to escape.

Somehow during those horrible years
I managed to find where I belonged-
And it was with the people I had known all along.

When life was turning good,
We suddenly had to separate,
Scatter really,
And I knew things wouldn't be the same.

We grew up together.
We grew beautiful together.
The time we spent. the jokes we shared
Will never be forgotten.
When I stared at the pictures of us
I realized how special you really were.
