WEB QUEST...Día de los Muertos

DUE Monday October 21st, worth 30 points

El Día de los Muertos, or the Days of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday honoring the dead. It is celebrated every year at the same time as Halloween and the Christian holy days of All Saints Day and All Souls Day (November 1st and 2nd). El Día de los Muertos is not a sad time, but instead a time of remembering and rejoicing.
Your job is to go on a web quest to find out more information about this holiday before we celebrate it in class.
¿Listo para empezar? Que la aventura comience…….
1. Primero Go to http://www.azcentral.com/ent/dead/history/
2. You will be able to answer the following questions by clicking on the various links found in this website.
3. You will also be able to answer questions by clicking on other websites that are provided for you.
Answer these questions on a separate piece of paper. You will turn this in for credit.

1. How long have indigenous people been practicing the ritual of day of the dead?
2. What do the skulls symbolize? What were they used for?
3. Define the following terms: alfeñique, angelitos, atole, calavera, calaveras, careta, cempasúchil, copalli, mole, ofrenda, pan de los muertos
4. Name some of the foods associated with Día de los Muertos.
5. Who are los angelitos?
6. What are the seven different aspects that make up the altar? Describe them.
7. When was All Souls' Day originally celebrated? http://www.mexweb.com/noche.htm

Also, please take a look at the project list below...all of you will have to complete a project for El Día de los Muertos...have in mind what project you would like to work on, we will sign up in class on Tuesday or Wednesday depending on the day that you come to class....the projects are limited, which means you should choose a few that look interesting to you, in case the one you want is full.

My hope is that you are able to reflect on the answers that you put down. You see, a wise person once said "A language cannot exist without a people and a people cannot exist without a language." When studying language, it is important to not only pay attention to the grammar rules, vocabulary, and so on, but also to realize that a language is dynamic, that it exists in a living context, and is the life-blood of a people/culture. I am sure that you have walked away with a deeper understanding of a celebration whish spans thousands of years and includes millions of people. Maybe you even have a new perspective on death. In any case, take these exercises and this knowledge and use them to increase your curiosity about the lives and traditions of people around the Spanish-speaking world. ¡¡¡GRACIAS!!!
