Reasons for choosing poem explained, but the reasons are not linked to life events/experiences of student.  Poem not embedded in context of student's life.  Student seems to be just going through the motions.

Student communicates passion and enthusiasm for poem.  Student has strong reasons for having chosen poem, and these reasons relate directly to student's life, beliefs, and experience.  Poem is excellent and contains much richness of language and sophisticated themes.

Incomplete or inadequate.  Superficial reading of poem.  Failure to identify elements of poetry.

An analysis of poetry is attempted, but it is not very thorough.  Student just scratches the surface of poem, perhaps because the poem is superficial.  There is not much analysis of poem to be discussed afterward.

Extensive explanation and analysis of poem with all or most literary elements identified and pointed out.  Student sees deeply into poem and brings out what is not readily apparent.  Shows evidence of having thought long and deeply about poem.  Poem analyzed from a variety of different points of view.

Class Discussion

Very short and uninteresting.  Student does not take initiative.  No study questions, or questions not pursued in discussion.

Discussion goes well for a few minutes but then runs flat.  Poem too superficial for a good discussion.   Student not prepared and therefore discussion not conducted well.

Student leads enthusiastic discussion and examines complexities and ambiguities of poem.  Student asks pointed and sophisticated questions.  Student brings peers into discussion well and directs the current of conversation.  Student involves class effectively.
