Our Philosophy
We strongly believe in Community Service at Foothill
Technology High School. Giving back to and improving
the community which provided us the opportunity for
excellence in education is the cornerstone of our Community
Service program. Students are encouraged to surpass
the minimum hours required for Community Service, as
the student may qualify for scholarship opportunities
and/or use their Community Service experiences on college
admission applications if they go well beyond these
minimum requirements.
Students are responsible for securing a Community Service
placement. This experience will be similar to that of
finding a job, a situation the student will face throughout
life. An approved
list of organizations (.doc or
.pdf formats) is
posted in the Student Services Building and is being
constantly updated. Students may also ask
friends and relatives about community service opportunities
and search the Internet to find a suitable, local, non-profit
organizations for which to volunteer.
Pre-approval for
community service organizations not on the approved
list must be requested in writing prior to service.
The
Community
Service Advisory Committee (CSAC) will meet monthly
to review and vote on those requests. Other volunteer
opportunities
will be posted at Foothill Technology High School
as well as in the school bulletin as needs in the community
arise and are brought to our attention. We recommend
a minimum of three different community service activities
over the four years of high school, but two different
organizations are required.
Community Service Guidelines
Your community service activity must meet the following
guidelines:
- It must be something
that benefits others.
- It must be something that you are not required
to do by anyone else.
- It must be something for which you are not paid
or otherwise given credit.
- The organization or individual may not personally
profit monetarily from your services: non-profit
only.
- The community service for the non-profit organization
must be done in Ventura County.
If you have any questions as to whether your choice of
community service meets these guidelines, please check
with Mrs.
Kapala in the Media Center.
You will not
receive credit for any work you perform that does
not meet the guidelines or was performed for an unapproved
organization. Graduation Requirements
The 75-hour Community
Service graduation requirement is broken down as
follows:
- 9th, 10th,
11th grades.…….…60
hours by end of junior (11th) year
(20 hours per year is recommended, but all 60 hours may
be done in one year)
- 12th
grade year………15 hours
minimum (must be completed as part of Senior project)
*This is the minimum graduation requirement.
Students are encouraged to do more. Transfer Students Community Service Graduation Requirements
- 20 hours minimum each year or partial year at Foothill,
9th through 11th grades
- 12th
grade year………15 hours
minimum (must be completed as part of Senior
project)
Community Service Paper Requirements
The student must write and submit a short typewritten
paper for each organization where service was performed
during each school year. The paper should briefly relate
his/her Community Service experience. To be acceptable,
the paper must include the following:
- What the student learned about the community by doing
the Community Service.
- How
the student’s participation improved
the organization and/or local community.
- Identification of the values and ethics of the organization
for which they worked.
- Explanation
of how the experience related to or changed
the student’s present career goals.
All community service hours must
be turned in by the end of September for any service performed from September
through August of the prior school year.
Example: Student
volunteered for Easter Seals in March 2005, and volunteered
at 4th of July, 2005 Ventura Street Fair: those hours
must be submitted by the end of September of
the following
school year, 2005. Community service performed up until
August 31 and not turned in by the end of September
of the
same year will not be accepted. By
following these guidelines, all service can
be verified with organizations in a timely
manner by the supervising
individuals. Also, this ensures that community service
hours don’t become lost over time.
The completed forms and paper should be turned
in to the Media Center as soon as possible
after performing the community service. The hours will
be logged when
turned in during the year and students will be notified
in September of their senior year if they are behind
in Community Service hours.
Please note:
It is the student’s
responsibility to ensure that the required service
hours are performed, documented, and submitted.
AGAIN – SERVICE
CAN BE PERFORMED FOR ORGANIZATIONS ON THE APPROVED LIST ONLY. ANY SERVICE PERFORMED FOR
AN ORGANIZATION NOT ON THE APPROVED LIST AND NOT PRE-APPROVED
BY THE CSAC WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
