Exercise 7: Macro, (close-up) photography
Objective:
Each student will explore the world of close-up photography through
the creation of 5 close-up images. A second objective of the exercise
is to learn to look at objects from a different perspective/angle.
In this case, the objects will be viewed from a closer proximity
than usual.
Technical aspects of the project:
· It will be required that each student use their camera on
the close-up setting. This setting is often designated by a small flower
symbol. If the camera does not have a close-up setting, the camera
cannot be used. If unsure about the camera, or how to set it to macro,
please see the instructor.
·
Camera support will be critical for this exercise. Each and every vibration
will be multiplied when photographing close-up, so it is critical and
necessary that a sandbag or tripod be used. Students will need to provide
their own tripod if shooting at home, but sandbags or beanbags will
be available for checkout. Several tripods will be available for in-class
use only.
·
It is inherent in macro photography there is a greater need for light.
When photographing objects close-up, the depth of field, (the amount
of depth that is in focus, from foreground to background) is decreased.
If photographing indoors, place the light at a close proximity to the
object. Shutter speed should not be less than 1/125 of a second in
order for the image to be sharp.
·
Images MUST be in-focus. Out of focus images will not be acceptable
for this assignment.
Creative Aspects of the Exercise:
·
The objects to be photographed need to be full of detail, and need
to be something that is not normally seen close-up. Please avoid the
obvious, throw in a little mystery, and ambiguity.
Exercise is worth 50 points.
