Assignment: Seamed Background Tiles - 30 points

You will be creating a collection of sample web page backgrounds, in the form of SEAMED tiles, to demonstrate your new skills in Photoshop 6.0.

Part 1:

File and Folder Structure

  • In your portfolio folder, make a folder called backgroundtiles

Part 2:

Creating the Background Tiles

  • Step 1 - Open Photoshop
  • Step 2 - Go to FILE menu, choose NEW
  • Step 3 - Choose settings as follows:
    • set measurement units to pixels
    • width=100 pixels,
    • height=100 pixels,
    • resolution=72 dpi,
    • mode=RGB color,
    • contents=transparent
  • Step 4 - Select fill tool (paintcan, may hide under gradient)
  • Step 5 - Use colorpicker to choose a web-safe color
  • Step 6 - Fill your canvas with color or with a gradient
  • Step 7 - Use the filter in texture category called texturizer to add texture
  • Step 8 - Experiment by adding other filters and adjusting their settings
  • Step 9 - Save your layered psd file as background_tiles.psd in your web_design folder
  • Step 10 - Repeat this process on new layers until you have a six (6) sample tiles (1 per layer) to display in your portfolio
    • They should be distinctly different - not just a color change
  • Step 11 - When all 6 tiles are ready, hide all but 1 layer...
    • Go to FILE menu, choose SAVE FOR WEB - use gif or jpg format as appropriate (whichever looks better and will load faster)
    • Save into the your new folder called background_tiles
    • Name each tile descriptively
    • Repeat with the next layer...

Part 3:

Evaluation

When you have finished all six (6) tiles and have used "Save for Web" to place the finished products into your background_tiles folder, please start the "Tiles Display" assignment

THESE TILES MUST BE DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER OR YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT!!!

This assignment is worth 30 participation points - 4 per tile and 6 for the display tablepage.
