Pairs Work: Get a Job - Teen Job Brainstorm - 50 points

Finding a job that fits your personality, availability and interests can be a challenge as a teenager. Finding an employer willing to train you as an employee with little to no experience is also a challenge. Selecting "applications wanted" ads for which you are truly qualified and can be legally hired can also present difficulties.

Today you will work in pairs to brainstorm possible places of employment FOR A TEENAGER (14-17) in your community.

Then, you will split up your list and go online to find the contact and location information for each business on your list. You will organize this information in a Word document for your partnership (no longer than 2 pages) and upload it to the WIKI for credit.

When finished, make sure your name, your partner's name and period number are on your printed papers and upload as a .doc file to the appropriate place on the WIKI.

Part 1:

Pairs Brainstorming

Choose a partner to work with - pairs.

Open Microsoft Word on one computer station per pair and create brainstorming list of places for possible employment, in Ventura or your local neighborhood community, where you think it would appropriate and interesting for a teenager to get a job.

  • List should be a minimum of 30 items in length
    • You may not repeat businesses with multiple locations in the area
    • For example, if you list Starbuck's then you may only count it as 1 item on your list (not 6 for the 6 different Starbuck's stores in Ventura)
  • Be realistic about where a teenager with little to no experience could actually be hired
  • Locations should be within walking, cycling, skating, skateboarding or public transportation distance from your home or school - we will assume that you are not yet driving
  • Save this document in your techlit1 folder as "XXXXXXgetajobbrainstormXXX.doc"
  • Fit your list on one page, add both partner's names at the top, upload to the WIKI no later than FRIDAY!!
  • 10 points of 50 for the original list

Part 2:

Gathering Contact and Location Information

When your list is completed (after 20-30 minutes), split the list in half and assign one half to each partner.

Using the Internet (Yahoo! Yellow Pages is a good place to start), find and record in a Word document the following:

  • complete name of business
  • complete street address including city and zip code
  • business phone number including area code
  • business/corporate website address, if available

Using Yahoo! Maps/Driving Directions or Mapquest, find the distance in miles from our school address, 100 Day Road, Ventura 93003 to the business location.

Your item in Word should look like this, correct capitals and punctuation included (no extra spacing between lines):

Starbuck's, 4960 Telephone Road, Ventura CA 93003, (805) 644-7251
www.starbucks.com
2.5 miles

Part 3:

Completing Work and Turning It In

When you have collected the required contact information for each business, format your document so that it all fits on 2-3 pages (may require smaller font size, less spacing between sections, smaller margins at top and bottom, etc.).

Double-check work for spelling, proper capitalization, correct punctuation, etc. - POINTS WILL BE TAKEN OFF FOR MECHANICAL AND GRAMMAR ERRORS

Verify that your and your partner's full names and period number are listed at the top of each page (Insert / Headers / Edit Header)

Include a title "Get A Job - Teen Job Brainstorm" centered at the top of the first page.

Save As a .doc file and upload to the WIKI - 40 of 50 points
