You and your fellow experts in the hazards advanced technology brings our world have been hired to deliver a presentation to the Council on the Quality of Life in Ventura. Your audience, in particular, is concerned about how our modern society is endangered by new threats from determined enemies that can and have caused us vast harm. Our new technologies and global economy have brought with them not only great power and wealth but fresh dangers. Therefore, we have hired you and your colleagues as experts on modern global politics and economics and technology to brief us on the present situation.
The Council wants to see the following topics covered both insightfully and in depth: Internet privacy, hacking and other cybercrime, the new wave of terrorism, and threats modern society presents to the physical environment. Keep in mind the Council consists of distinguished citizens from the community who are not experts in these subjects. We are very concerned about the recent terror attacks in New York and what the future might bring our nation in terms of future terrorism. And what kind of a threat does hacking pose to our way of life? How does modern technology threaten to diminish our precious right to privacy? How can we fight terrorism and maintain law and order without giving up our treasured constitutional freedoms? How can we enjoy the fruits of industrial society without jeopardizing the health of our physical surroundings? Or is this impossible? Modern life appears to bring with it many grave problems that defy simple or short-term solutions.
The nature of these threats makes boundaries and jurisdictions irrelevant in our increasingly interdependent world; the Council on the Quality of Life in Ventura wants your input before we make any recommendations, as we want to deal with problems now before they become possibly critical or fatal. The Council will rely heavily on you and your group's presentation to provide us with the information and advice necessary to do advise the community. The wisdom of our decision will rest in large part on the quality of information we receive from you in your presentation.
